washingtonpost.com – Laboratory mice commonly used in research around the world may be descendants of Japanese mice taken to Europe centuries ago. Using a supercomputer, researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Genetics (NIG) and other institutions studied the genetic code of lab mice and found there is a great possibility their ancestors were Japanese mice that had been taken to Europe during Japan’s Edo period, which spanned most of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
