washingtonpost.com – If you watch WETA’s newest documentary about the District for any reason at all, it should be for the footage. As the visual vocabulary of the city changes so rapidly, it’s easy to forget how much already has. Beyond the specific story that the movie tells, the images alone in “Washington in the 80s” take you back to a city that shaped how I viewed the world. The movie, which debuted Monday night and is narrated by local TV news legend Gordon Peterson, shows people buying newspapers at newsstands, Hechinger Mall on Benning Road and the ubiquitous Peoples Drug.
