SINGAPORE – The rate of workplace fatalities hit a new low in 2014 but it is still a number too high, said Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin on Thursday.

“No one wants to see their colleagues hurt at work, let alone killed,” he added, urging business owners and employees to bring the number of workplace deaths to zero.

Last year, 60 people died during the course of their work. This translates to a workplace fatal injury rate of 1.8 per 100,000 employees, a decrease from 2.3 in 2013.

The new figures were released at the one-day BizSafe convention, where more than 15 companies were commended for their commitment to workplace safety. The full report on Workplace Safety and Health Statistics for 2014 will be released by end of March.
